1. Procedures of teaching
I had 3 classes on the first day of my demo teaching, and I started the class by introducing myself first, then singing together. In other classes, I started by taking a video clip about the material we will cover in the next 40 minutes.
Once the class looks ready to learn and is starting to focus, I start by inviting them to interact with the text we are discussing.
2. Time management and organizing activities
This is very, very important in my experience. In the first class, I was a little overwhelmed by my poor time management. 40 minutes feels very short if we don't organise it well. We must be able to measure the duration from one activity to another. After the mistakes I made in my first class, in my 2nd–4th class, I did well.
Not reducing activities, just shortening explanations and having more direct contact with them in the group. In this way, all activities can be carried out well and can form very good relationships with students.
3. Classroom management
Class management is no less important when we become teachers. For my first impression, I wouldn't be surprised if the students in the class didn't or haven't really responded if I asked or looked a little embarrassed because this won't be easy for them. This is a first for me to come in and get to know them, as well as those who have just met me and know me as their teacher. The students I handle are from primary schools and are basically overactive and very enthusiastic about activities or creativity.
Sometimes it is very nice to see their activity and enthusiasm to approach and ask questions, but sometimes it is also dangerous if we are careless and seem to ignore other groups because it seems to give them less attention.
I try my best to explain the group in detail and move to another group so that everyone gets clear information so that they can overcome their overactivity, which could make me leave the realm of the lesson plan.
4. Problem-solving while teaching and staying in the designated school
Teaching with different language challenges is the main challenge in teaching. This is also what I experienced when teaching at Future School; we could only communicate through English, and not at all there was some vocabulary, which was new and a little difficult for primary school students at Future School.
But that wasn't the biggest problem that happened because of the help from the Teacher Assistant, or T.A., teachers who could speak English at the school who stepped in to help me in class if there was vocabulary that they didn't understand.
My statement above is not saying that they didn't understand until the end; it was proven that from the second meeting until the end, the Teacher Assistant or T.A, only helped me to make the class less noisy.
Of course, seeing that I was weak at explaining or interpreting difficult words, I didn't give up just by having a Teacher Assistant or T.A. In the next class, I tried to change my teaching pattern, namely adding my body movements and additional pictures as examples for my word "MOVING". practice using body movements.
